Boo Benefit History

Our benefit began in October of 1998 after Boo (Charles "Boo" Chaler) was burned over 95% of his body in a welding accident in May 1998.  Several friends of Boo knew how much Boo loved his motorcycle and his riding.  They began the benefit in his honor while he was still hospitalized at LSU Burn Center in Shreveport, La.  The money that year was given to Boo, which in turn we donated the proceeds to the Percy Johnson Burn Foundation.  Since that year Boo and many of the same friends continue to host the "Boo Run Benefit".

After spending much time with the LSU Burn Unit, we learned that the Percy R. Johnson Burn Foundation provided a cost free week-long camp for children and adolescent burn survivors.  The Foundation also had visions of a "respite house" near the burn unit (LSU is the Ark-La-Tex Regional Burn Unit) where families of burn survivors could be provided lodging while their loved ones are hospitalized.  In addition they assist with financial cost of medical supplies for burn survivors who may have difficulty in obtaining these necessary items.

For the last four years we have continued the rally with the help of friends and local businesses for this very worthy cause.  Our 2001 "Boo Run" raised $30,000 which assisted in providing the week-long summer camp for burn survivor children (ages 5-17).  In addition, the Foundation was fortunate to purchase a house near the LSU Burn Unit which is currently in the beginning stages of renovation.

Currently the Percy R. Johnson Burn Foundation operates on limited funding from private fund raising events and donations such as our "Boo Run Benefit".

All proceeds, again, this year have been donated to the Percy R. Johnson Burn Foundation.  Our dreams are that every burn survivor child wishing to attend summer camp will be able to attend.  And that money will be raised to assist in completion of restoration needed to the "respite" house in order to assist family members of burn patients/survivors.
